About Me
My name is Danielle Powell and I am a University of Maryland, College Park student. I am a freshman electrical engineering student and this semester I took English 101. For this class I had to pick a specific topic that I would research and write about throughout the entire semester. The topic that I chose for my research was fighting obesity. I chose this topic because I was overweight during part of my childhood. When I was in first grade I moved to Maryland and spent most days at my grandparents’ house. I had the stereotypical grandparents who let me eat anything that I wanted. As I was gaining weight my grandparents kept telling my parents that “it’s okay. She’s a kid; she’ll run it off.” I did not run it off; by the end of my first grade year I was overweight. Fortunately for me, my mother put me in sports camps and made sure that I was always doing some type of sport during every season so that I could lose the weight that I gained, maintain my weight, and stay active. This situation along with the idea that my grandparents posed about the role of “running [what you eat] off” has always made me question what truly causes obesity. Therefore, this is where my research began in this class. |
